RSA LOCAL SOLAR INVERTER MANUFACTURE

RWW ENGINEERING (Pty) Ltd is currently manufacturing Solar PV Inverters for a project in the North West Province of South Africa. The WD3 Inverter power station platform is a design by Spanish company Green Power Technologies (GPTech). Each inverter has an AC output capacity of roughly 4MW with a maximum input voltage of 1500Vdc. The current project’s PV plant has a rating of 50MW.
In the previous year RWW manufactured 60 inverters with a combined output of roughly 250MW generation capacity for the round 4 IPP projects in the Northern Cape. The manufacture of the inverters was completed in a record time of less than 8 months, with manufacture peaking at three units per week. The equipment meets the highest quality and international standards required for utility scale solar projects.
The production of the inverters involves local manufacture of steelwork, copper work, assembly of internal equipment, wiring and comprehensive factory testing of the units. Local manufacturing facilities and labour are used in order to obtain a high level of local content, which also results in significant skills transfer and the ability to provide local backup and support for the equipment.
Not only can the WD3 act as a PV Inverter, but the design is also suited for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) requirements; amongst other applications.
